muscadines

Wild southeastern grapes

Muscadines are grapes native to the southeastern United States, larger and thicker-skinned than common table grapes.

They grow wild and are cultivated for eating fresh, making wine, and producing jams and jellies.

The flavor is distinctively musky and sweet: We picked muscadines from the vine behind the barn.

Sometimes called scuppernongs, though that term properly refers to a bronze-colored variety.
