midgut

Intestinal tract section

The midgut is the middle section of the digestive tract, between the foregut and hindgut.

In vertebrate embryos, it develops into most of the small intestine.

In insects and other arthropods, the midgut is where most digestion and nutrient absorption occurs: The caterpillar's midgut breaks down plant material.
