medical examiners
Death investigation doctors
Medical examiners are officials who investigate deaths, particularly those that are sudden, violent, or unexplained.
Unlike coroners, who may be elected officials without medical training, medical examiners are licensed physicians—typically forensic pathologists.
They perform autopsies, determine cause and manner of death, and provide expert testimony in legal proceedings: The medical examiner ruled it a homicide.
