expert witness
Courtroom knowledge source
An expert witness is someone called to testify in legal proceedings because of specialized knowledge, training, or experience in a particular field.
Unlike ordinary witnesses who describe only what they personally observed, expert witnesses offer professional opinions and interpretations—a forensic accountant explaining financial fraud, a medical examiner determining cause of death, or an engineer assessing structural failure.
The defense brought in an expert witness to challenge the DNA evidence.
