mayapple

Umbrella-leaved forest plant

Mayapple is a woodland plant native to eastern North America, named for its apple-like fruit that ripens in May.

The plant produces a single umbrella-shaped leaf, or when flowering, two leaves sheltering a waxy white blossom beneath.

The ripe fruit is edible, though the rest of the plant is poisonous.

Also called American mandrake.
