bloodroot
White-petaled, crimson-juiced plant
Bloodroot is a North American woodland plant with a single white flower and a thick underground stem that produces a red-orange sap when cut.
The name comes from this blood-colored juice, which Native Americans used as a dye and in traditional medicine.
The plant blooms in early spring, often before its distinctive lobed leaf fully unfurls.
We spotted bloodroot pushing through the leaf litter on our March hike.
