groundcover

Low spreading plants

Groundcover refers to low-growing plants that spread horizontally to cover bare soil, preventing erosion and suppressing weeds: We planted creeping thyme as groundcover between the stepping stones.

The term also describes any vegetation or material covering the ground surface.

Often written as two words: ground cover.
