matrilineality

Mother-line inheritance system

Matrilineality is the practice of tracing descent, inheritance, or group membership through the mother's line rather than the father's.

In matrilineal societies, children belong to the mother's clan, and property or titles pass from mothers to daughters or from maternal uncles to nephews.

The system concerns lineage, not power—matrilineal societies aren't necessarily matriarchies.
