masting

Fitting vertical poles

Masting refers to the production of nuts and seeds by trees, especially the irregular cycles of abundance and scarcity.

In a mast year, oaks, beeches, and other hardwoods drop enormous quantities of acorns or nuts; in off years, almost none.

The heavy masting this fall means plenty of food for deer and squirrels.

The phenomenon helps trees overwhelm seed predators—too many nuts to eat means some survive to sprout.
