lutes
Fretted Renaissance strings
Lutes is the plural of lute, a stringed instrument with a rounded back and angled pegbox, prominent in Renaissance and Baroque music: The museum displayed several antique lutes.
To lute is also to seal joints with cement or clay, making lutes the third-person singular of that verb: She lutes the vessel before firing.
