archlute

Extended neck lute

An archlute is a large bass lute with an extended neck carrying additional unstopped bass strings.

Developed in Renaissance Italy, it provided deeper tones for accompanying singers and ensembles.

The instrument's distinctive feature is its second pegbox mounted above the first, holding the longer bass strings that aren't fingered but resonate sympathetically or are plucked open.
