bristleworms

Hairy marine worms

Bristleworms are segmented marine worms with bristly appendages along their bodies.

The bristles, called chaetae, project from fleshy protrusions on each segment and aid in movement or defense—some species have bristles that sting or break off in predators.

Bristleworms range from tiny burrowers to colorful reef dwellers like fireworms and feather dusters.

Also called polychaetes.
