lub-dub

Heart valve sounds

Lub-dub represents the sound of a heartbeat—the two-part rhythm heard through a stethoscope or felt in the chest.

The first sound (lub) comes from valves closing as the heart contracts; the second (dub) from valves closing as it relaxes.

The term appears in medical contexts and poetic descriptions of cardiac rhythm: She could hear her own lub-dub quickening.
