heart murmur

Abnormal valve sound

A heart murmur is an unusual sound heard through a stethoscope during a heartbeat, caused by turbulent blood flow in or near the heart.

Many heart murmurs are harmless, particularly in children, and are called innocent or functional murmurs.

Others may indicate valve problems, holes in the heart, or other structural abnormalities that require monitoring or treatment.

Doctors grade murmurs on a scale from 1 to 6 based on how loud they are.
