lockwire

Fastener retention strand

Lockwire is thin wire threaded through holes in fasteners to prevent them from loosening under vibration.

Common in aviation and machinery where bolt failure could be catastrophic, the wire is routed so that any loosening motion would pull against the wire's tension: The mechanic lockwired the engine bolts before flight.

Also called safety wire.

As a verb, to lockwire is to secure fasteners this way.
