cotter pin
Bent wire keeper
A cotter pin is a metal fastener with two prongs that spread apart after insertion through a hole, preventing a nut or pin from backing out.
The simplest version is a bent wire; more elaborate types have a looped head for easier removal.
Essential in machinery, automotive, and bicycle repair where vibration might loosen connections: Don't forget to replace the cotter pin after greasing the axle.
