linotyper

Hot metal compositor

A linotyper is a person who operates a Linotype machine, the hot-metal typesetting device that dominated newspaper and book printing through most of the 20th century.

The operator would type at a keyboard, and the machine would cast entire lines of metal type—hence "line o' type." The trade largely disappeared with the shift to phototypesetting and digital printing.
