limpet mine
Magnetic ship explosive
A limpet mine is an explosive device designed to attach magnetically to the hull of a ship, named for its resemblance to the limpet shellfish that clings tenaciously to rocks.
Saboteurs or combat divers typically place these mines below the waterline, where detonation can breach the hull and sink or disable the vessel.
Intelligence agencies suspected a limpet mine was responsible for the tanker explosion.
