left wing
Politically progressive side
Left wing describes political positions favoring progressive change, social equality, and government intervention in the economy.
The term comes from the French Revolutionary assembly, where radicals sat to the president's left.
As a noun, the left wing is the liberal faction of a party or movement: the left wing of the Democratic Party.
In sports, left wing refers to a position on the left side of the field or a player who occupies it.
