leatherneck
Semper Fi soldier
Leatherneck is informal slang for a United States Marine.
The term dates to the leather collar once part of Marine uniforms, which protected the neck and enforced upright posture.
It remains affectionate rather than derogatory: My grandfather was a leatherneck in the Pacific.
