leathernecks
US amphibious soldiers
Leathernecks is informal slang for United States Marines.
The nickname dates to the leather collar once part of the Marine uniform, which protected the neck in combat.
The term is affectionate rather than derogatory, used both by Marines themselves and others: The leathernecks landed at dawn.
