sulfation

Lead-acid battery killer

Sulfation is the formation of lead sulfate crystals on battery plates, particularly in lead-acid batteries.

It occurs when a battery remains discharged or undercharged for extended periods, and the crystals harden and reduce the battery's capacity to hold a charge.

Severe sulfation can permanently damage a battery: The car wouldn't start because sulfation had ruined the old battery.
