lammergeier

Marrow-eating mountain scavenger

A lammergeier is a large vulture of mountainous regions in Europe, Asia, and Africa, also called the bearded vulture for the dark feathers beneath its beak.

Unlike most vultures, it feeds primarily on bones, dropping them from great heights onto rocks to crack them open.

The name comes from German for "lamb vulture," reflecting an old belief that it preyed on lambs.
