kombi

Vintage Volkswagen van

A kombi is a Volkswagen Type 2 minibus—the iconic vehicle with a split windshield and rounded body produced from 1950 onward.

The term comes from the German *Kombinationskraftwagen* (combination vehicle), referring to its dual use for passengers and cargo.

Kombi remains common in South Africa, Brazil, and Australia for this style of van: We drove the coast in an old kombi.

The word sometimes extends to similar vans from other manufacturers.
