Buses and trains

Public transport is a system of vehicles—buses, trains, subways, ferries—available for shared use by the general population, typically for a fare.

The term is more common in British English; Americans usually say public transportation.

Both refer to the infrastructure that moves people through cities and regions without private vehicles: I take public transport to work.
