Torah portion
Scriptural synagogue segment
A Torah portion is one of the 54 sections into which the Five Books of Moses are divided for weekly synagogue readings.
Each Shabbat, Jewish congregations read the assigned portion, completing the entire Torah in a yearly cycle.
A child's bar or bat mitzvah often centers on chanting their Torah portion: She's been practicing her Torah portion for months.
