killing fields
Mass grave sites
Killing fields are sites of mass execution or genocide, where large numbers of people were systematically murdered.
The term originated with the Cambodian genocide of the 1970s, when the Khmer Rouge regime killed an estimated two million people, leaving behind fields strewn with human remains.
The phrase now applies to any location of mass atrocity: The countryside became killing fields during the civil war.
