kanji script

Logographic Japanese writing

Kanji script is the system of logographic characters used in written Japanese, borrowed from Chinese.

Each kanji represents a concept or word rather than a sound: The word "mountain" is written with a single kanji.

Japanese writing typically combines kanji with two phonetic scripts (hiragana and katakana).

Literate Japanese adults know several thousand kanji.
