juggernauts

Crushing dominant powers

Juggernaut, a word borrowed from Hindi, originally referred to the Hindu god Vishnu and the temple where he is worshipped.

The large cart used to carry his statue in a procession inspired the modern sense of juggernaut: something that moves with great force and crushes everything in its path.

Figuratively, juggernaut is often applied to a campaign or movement that is gaining momentum and appears unstoppable: Her presidential campaign was a juggernaut that left her opponents in the dust.
