wind shear

Sudden airflow change

Wind shear is a sudden change in wind speed or direction over a short distance.

It occurs both horizontally and vertically in the atmosphere.

Wind shear is particularly dangerous to aircraft during takeoff and landing, when a sudden downdraft or crosswind can cause loss of lift: The pilot reported severe wind shear on approach.
