jerrican

Portable fuel can

A jerrican is a flat-sided metal or plastic container for storing and transporting fuel or water, typically holding about five gallons.

The design originated in Germany before World War II—jerry being British slang for German—and Allied forces quickly adopted it for military use.

Also spelled jerry can or jerrycan: We strapped two jerricans to the back of the jeep.
