filling station

Roadside fuel retailer

A filling station is a place where vehicles refuel—what Americans more commonly call a gas station.

The term dates from early automotive days and sounds slightly old-fashioned now: We stopped at a filling station outside of town.

In British English, petrol station is the standard term.
