intubate

Place breathing tube

To intubate is to insert a tube into a body passage, almost always referring to placing a breathing tube through the mouth or nose into the trachea.

Medical personnel intubate patients who cannot breathe on their own—during surgery, in emergencies, or when on a ventilator: The paramedics intubated him at the scene.

The procedure is called intubation.
