oximetry

Blood oxygen monitoring

Oximetry is the measurement of oxygen saturation in the blood.

A pulse oximeter—the small clip placed on a fingertip in medical settings—uses light absorption to determine how much oxygen hemoglobin is carrying.

The technique became widely familiar during COVID-19, when low oxygen levels signaled serious illness: Her oximetry readings dropped overnight.
