Irish independence
Britain leaves Ireland
Irish independence refers to Ireland's separation from British rule, culminating in the establishment of the Irish Free State in 1922.
The term encompasses both the historical movement—including the 1916 Easter Rising and the War of Independence—and the political status achieved.
Because Northern Ireland remained part of the United Kingdom, discussions of Irish independence often involve questions of partition and reunification: The question of Irish independence was only partially resolved by the treaty.
