huffing

Gasping for air

Huffing is inhaling chemical vapors to get high—typically from aerosol sprays, paint, glue, or solvents.

The practice is dangerous and can cause sudden death even on first use: Three teenagers were caught huffing paint behind the school.

Separately, huffing describes breathing heavily or expressing annoyance through audible breath: She stood there huffing after climbing the stairs; He was huffing about the long wait.
