clastic

Made of fragments

Clastic describes rocks or sediments composed of fragments broken from preexisting rocks.

Sandstone and shale are clastic rocks, formed when eroded particles settle and compact over time.

The term appears in geology to distinguish fragmental rocks from those formed by chemical precipitation or organic accumulation: clastic sediments deposited by ancient rivers.
