balanced rock
Perched erosion remnant
A balanced rock is a boulder perched precariously on a smaller base or pedestal, appearing ready to topple but held in place by its center of gravity.
These formations result from differential erosion wearing away softer surrounding rock while leaving harder stone intact: The balanced rock at Garden of the Gods draws thousands of visitors yearly.
