John Henry

Legendary railroad laborer

John Henry is an African American folk hero, a steel-driving man who raced against a steam-powered hammer to prove human strength and dignity against the machine.

According to legend, he won the contest but died immediately after, hammer in hand.

The tale became a powerful symbol of workers' struggles against technological displacement and of Black resilience.
