gay pride

LGBTQ self-affirmation movement

Gay pride is the affirmation of LGBTQ identity and dignity, rejecting shame historically imposed by society.

The term emerged from the gay rights movement of the late 1960s and remains central to annual pride celebrations: The gay pride parade drew thousands.

Often shortened to simply pride: Pride month, pride flag.
