homocysteine

Cardiovascular risk marker

Homocysteine is an amino acid produced when the body breaks down proteins.

It's a normal intermediate in metabolism, but elevated blood levels are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease, blood clots, and stroke.

B vitamins—especially folate, B6, and B12—help convert homocysteine to other compounds, keeping levels in check.
