hitchhike
Bum a ride
To hitchhike is to travel by soliciting free rides from passing vehicles, typically by standing at the roadside with an extended thumb.
The practice was common through the mid-20th century but has declined due to safety concerns.
We hitchhiked across the country one summer.
A hitchhiker is someone who travels this way.
