hemoprotein

Iron-containing blood molecule

A hemoprotein is a protein containing a heme group—an iron-bearing molecule that gives blood its red color.

Hemoglobin and myoglobin are hemoproteins, as are cytochromes and certain enzymes.

The heme group enables these proteins to bind oxygen or transfer electrons.

Also spelled haemoprotein in British English.
