multipotent
Can become several
Multipotent describes cells that can develop into multiple specialized cell types, but within a limited range.
A multipotent stem cell in bone marrow can become various blood cells but not nerve or muscle cells.
The term falls between totipotent (can become anything) and unipotent (can become only one type): Multipotent progenitor cells offer therapeutic potential with fewer ethical concerns than embryonic stem cells.
