headsails
Bow-mounted sail cloth
Headsails are the sails set forward of a vessel's foremast, including jibs and genoas.
They work with the mainsail to harness wind, and their trim affects a boat's balance and pointing ability.
On modern sailboats, a roller-furling headsail can be deployed or stowed from the cockpit: We reduced the headsail as the wind picked up.
