snuffing

Putting out candles

Snuffing is the act of extinguishing something, typically a flame: snuffing out the candles before bed.

By extension, to snuff out is to end or eliminate abruptly: The regime snuffed out all opposition.

Snuffing also refers to inhaling powdered tobacco (snuff) or, in drug slang, inhaling substances through the nose.
