haploids

Gametes, for example

Haploids are cells or organisms containing only one complete set of chromosomes—half the genetic material of the species' normal cells.

In humans, sperm and egg cells are haploid, each carrying 23 chromosomes that combine during fertilization to create a diploid cell with the full 46.

The term applies across biology wherever sexual reproduction occurs: Haploid spores give rise to the gametophyte generation in ferns.
