hand line
Angler's simple cord
A hand line is a fishing line operated by hand rather than with a rod and reel—the fisher holds the line directly, feeling for bites and pulling in catches manually.
The method is ancient and still used for certain fish or in situations where simplicity matters: We caught squid using hand lines off the pier.
Hand line also refers to any rope or line meant to be gripped by hand, as on a boat or scaffolding.
