fire lanes
No-parking safety strips
Fire lanes are designated areas, usually alongside buildings or in parking lots, that must remain clear for emergency vehicle access.
They're typically marked with red paint, signs, or both, and parking in them brings fines or towing: Her car got towed from the fire lane outside the grocery store.
The term also applies to cleared strips in forests that help contain wildfires.
