hand-coloring

Painting by touch

Hand-coloring is the process of applying color to a black-and-white photograph or print by hand, using paints, dyes, or pencils.

The technique was common before color photography became widespread: The portrait had been hand-colored to give her cheeks a rosy tint.

It survives as an artistic choice for its distinctive, painterly quality.
